Olympics postponed to avoid clash with Black Caviar race

In a shock announcement today, the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG), said it has postponed the 2012 London Olympics indefinitely to avoid any conflict with champion horse Black Caviar’s racing schedule.

The announcement comes just days after the AFL season was rescheduled to make way for Australia’s most-loved sporting personality.

The sprint champion, who is unbeaten after 20 starts, will be racing in Europe over the northern summer and would have taken significant interest away from the world’s premier sporting event.

Organisers are hopeful the Olympics can start by January and say they aren’t concerned about the effect a cold British winter might have on athletes. “They’ll just have to rug up,” said a LOCOG spokesperson, “My advice to athletes is to bring a warm jumper. Poor old Black Caviar doesn’t have that option”.

Connections of Black Caviar are also considering entering the horse into the glamorous 100-metre sprint event at the rescheduled Games. “The competition in that race will be as tough as anything Cavi’s been up against. But we’re confident she can win it” the horse’s PA said. If she were to win that event, it would likely be her 95th straight win.

Black Caviar’s first European race will be in July against Italian first time starter Nota Chance and a donkey.
